How to Test Your IR Laser Cartridge Without an IR Camera

If you don’t have an IR camera handy, don’t worry — you can still check if your IR laser cartridge is working using just your smartphone. Here’s a quick step-by-step guide:

✅ Step 1: Remove the Battery Insulation Tab

Most IR cartridges come with a plastic tab to prevent the battery from draining during shipping. Make sure it’s completely removed.

🔋 Step 2: Check Battery Placement

Proper battery orientation is key:

  • For recoil-enabled cartridges, the positive (+) side should face up.

  • For standard SFL cartridges, the negative (–) side should face up.

📱 Step 3: Use Your Phone’s Front Camera

Switch your phone to selfie mode — front cameras are more likely to detect infrared light, even though it’s invisible to the human eye.

💡 Step 4: Activate the Cartridge

Hold the cartridge close to the camera lens and press the back activator to simulate firing. If it’s working, you’ll see a quick flash or glow on your screen.
